The woman with the chador spends her time listening to music alone in her apartment, skateboarding, or bedeviling pedestrians at night, until she comes across the lost Arash. He shows vulnerability and compassion, and she takes him to her home, where they listen to music, and she resists his exposed neck. They meet the next night, and she says that he does not know the terrible things she has done.
Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive have set vampire tale in Western and Eastern world both, and A Girl... This black&white picture offers style and atmosphere, quiet, meditative and rarely violent, it's filled with music and shadows. There is a running thread of social commentary although the town and premise are fictional. Let The Right One In and Only Lovers Left Alive are notable examples, and now A Girl has joined them, forming fantastic trinity of style, ideas, cinematography and unparalleled atmosphere. We know absolutely nothing about The Girl, but there is a pattern...unlike women in Iran, she has a certain, albeit supernatural power, and she uses it to punish men who have bullied others and wallowed in vices. Even if I'm only reading into this, I thought this was liberating in the context of the culture that's old and rich but traditionally repressive against women. This scene hardly holds any narrative purpose. Instead, its significance lies in bringing the film into conversation with a canonical Western text, serving as a reminder for the audience of the classic vampire figure Dracula. In the shot, The Girl slowly rises, inch by inch, from the depths of the bath water—eerily reminiscent of Dracula slowly rising out of his coffin.
Atti asks if the Girl is a thief, and she replies "no". A young rockabilly-looking youngster picks up a cat . It is young Arash, , an Iranian young man. On his way back to his car, he is bothered by a begging kid . He is despondent and leaves, claiming to have no money. The film, without the constraints of censorship that normally govern Iranian cinema, challenges some of the Islamic Republic’s ideals. In the context of post-revolutionary Iran, it is femininity and women’s sexuality that must be tamed and controlled. Veiling becomes the means through which this is attempted. Mysterious titular 'Girl' in fictional town named 'Bad Town' stalks the residents quietly, watching them go about their routines, helping the weak and good, punishing the crooked and corrupt.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night was shot over the course of twenty-four days, in the town of Taft in Kern County in southern California. Artsy fartsy at its "best", nicely filmed and with some interesting choices of music, but with no plot to speak of and several scenes that just keep dragging on. When I see a film made after the 1960s made in black-and-white it makes me weary at first. Some films do it as a gimmick, others to make it seem more artsy then other indie films, and some use it with purpose. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night thankfully is the latter of these scenarios and a wonderful debut feature length film for it's director, Ana Lily Amirpour. The film is a blend of horror, western films, film noir, and romance all mashed into one creatively original piece of cinema. It revolves around a small group of characters and their relationships. I won't spoil the film by telling details about each and every character, suffice it to say that they are well layered and complex.

Additionally, Bad City, the fictional location in which the film is set, may perhaps be a nod to Frank Miller's Sin City. Atti, a prostitute who worked for Saeed, is followed at night by the woman, and they retreat to the prostitute's apartment. The woman gives Atti the payment Saeed owed her. They have a conversation during which the woman realizes that Atti no longer remembers what it is to desire. Feel for that, merging the events onscreen to the song choice in a way that feels inevitable, in a way that opens up the scene.
The Girl shows her expensive jewelry and Arash's stolen watch from Saeed. The Girl sits down on a sofa and plays with an apple that Att has given her instead of eating it. Atti assumes that the Girl is a washout person who wants to become a prostitute. The Girl doesn't speak at first, but then she says that Atti doesn't like her job. Atti asks her why she is following her, and the Girl replies that she knows everything about her and that Atti doesn't know what she wants anymore, and that she can't even remember really wanting something. The Girl says that Atti is saving money but doesn't know what she wants it for.
